Growing up with a veterinarian as a father, we always had pets in the house, and in the barn. We loved each one as a member of our family.
Here is a list of some of the pets we cared for over the years:
- Chickens
- Penny the Beagle
- Sebastian the Yellow Fronted Amazon Parrot
- Mittens, the calico kitten
- Emmy the Golden Retriever
- Cher the Black Lab
- Megan the German Wired Hair Pointer
- Blue the Weimaraner
- Tigger the calico cat
- Smokey the domestic long haired cat
- Bagel the Beagle
- Peachy the hamster
- Guinea pigs
- Red eared slider turtles
- AJ the red crested Amazon Parrot
- Abe the African Grey Parrot
- Koi, goldfish, tropical freshwater fish
Horses:
- Betsy the Pony
- Chrissy the Pony
- Stardust the race horse
- Rebel
- Fireton
- Madison
- Midsummer Night’s Dream – A cart racing horse that competed at Scioto Downs, Ohio county fairs, and in Florida and other places. This was a partnership with Charles St. Jean, D.V.M.
I’m sure I missed a few, and my siblings will be sure to correct this list.
That is a good list. I don’t remember Bagel the Beagle, but that is a good name. I remember my favorite beagle, Penny, but that was probably before your time. You could probably add Betsey and Chrissy, our ponies, to the list . . . and Stardust, the race horse. I will always be grateful for the calico kitten, Mittens, that Dad picked out of an unwanted litter in the clinic and sent home to Iowa with Laurie and me. Mittens lived to be 19-years-old and was one of my favorite pets. Thanks for pulling this together!
Thanks, Lisa! I updated the list. Can you remember the name of the cart racing horse that Dad and Dr. St. Jean had at Scioto Downs?
I don’t remember the name of that horse, but I am assuming it was a Standardbred. Wasn’t Suzi – i.e., the old gray mare, the mom of Stardust? Who was Fireton? Good job on the updates. Who was Bagel the beagle?
Brad had a beagle, about 1990, and he named it Bagel. I don’t think he lived with us very long. Maybe Brad can fill in the rest of the story?
Bryan, thanks for that tip. That would have been around the time I started my freshman year at Ohio State in the Fall. I don’t remember Bagel, hmmm. I will be eager to hear Brad’s thoughts. I just vividly remember Brad’s fondness of Peachy the hamster. 😉
